MEDIA RELEASE – FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

DeFrank Center to Host Youth Winter Dance

San Jose, December 12, 2005 – As part of the Youth Services Program for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) youth, the Billy DeFrank LGBT Community Center will be hosting the holiday-themed Youth Winter Dance on Friday, December 16th beginning at 7:00 p.m.

The youth dance is solely for youth between the ages of 13-20 years of age. Admission is just $2.00 and a school or state-issued identification card is required. Formal attire is encouraged.

Julianne Carroll, the DeFrank Center’s Youth Services Coordinator, said, “For LGBT youth feeling disconnected from their families, the holidays can be a particularly difficult time. We hope that by offering a safe venue for our LGBT youth to socialize in a drug and alcohol-free environment, we can reduce the isolation experienced by so many youth during the holidays.”

The Youth Services Program at the DeFrank Center includes a range of support services for LGBT youth and young adults. In addition to facilitated support groups for LGBT youth, the program provides access to individual counseling and hosts a variety of social events for young adults from 18-30.

“In spite of the increased acceptance displayed towards gays and lesbians in our society, our LGBT youth still face tremendous discrimination and prejudice,” says Clark Williams, a social worker and the agency’s Interim Executive Director.

Says Williams, “Especially during the holidays, our LGBT youth need special care and attention. This chaperoned event provides a fun opportunity for our community’s LGBT youth and their allies to celebrate the holiday season safely among their peers.”
