When proposing a workshop, please consider
the following items:
Workshop Locations
Most of our workshops take place at
the Billy DeFrank LGBT Community Center at
938 The Alameda, San Jose, CA 95126. Some
classes may be held at other locations
when special equipment is needed.
Workshop Length
Workshop sessions are for 2-3 hour
periods. Workshops can range in length
from 1-day workshops to a multi-week class
no longer than 6 weeks. Our clients seem
to like one session classes and workshops
best.
Monday evenings between 6:30 and 10 p.m.
(usually 7–9 p.m. or 6:30–9:30 p.m.), or
Saturdays between noon and 5 p.m.
Workshop Size
Average class size is anticipated to
be between 8 and 15 students. This will
vary from class to class. A minimum
registration of 6 people is required. When
the minimum is not met, we will cancel the
class.
Instructor Compensation
Instructors will be paid $25 – $75 per
hour of instruction depending on
experience, and are independent
contractors with the DeFrank Center.
Profits sharing programs are available to
divid revenue between the Center and the
instructor.
When the minimum is not met and the class
is canceled, instructors are not paid.
Instructors are more than welcome to
donate all or any part of their fees to
back to the community center. Group
instructors must split course
salaries.
Sliding Scale
We have had great success offering
workshops and events with a sliding scale
based on the honor system. Please be
mindful of this when selecting your class
dues.
Scholarships
We encourage our instructors to offer
scholarships to the DeFrank Center staff.
This in turn offers our staff the ability
assist in growing a stronger community
with new knowledge.
