Description

Looking for a meaningful volunteer opportunity? The Billy DeFrank Center is always looking for volunteers to help support youth, adults, families and seniors in the LGBT community. Currently we desire increased participation in the following groups:

  • Coming Out - Wednesdays
  • Men's Support Group - Thursdays
  • Women's Support Group - Mondays
  • Bisexual Support - 1st & 3rd Tuesdays
  • Differently Able Support
  • Young Adults Support
  • Senior Adult Support

Additionally, we're looking for people interested in developing the following potential programs:

  • Women's Coming Out Group
  • Baby and Me (LGBT Families)

Please visit our group services page for details on what groups are sponsored by the DeFrank Center.

Experience

Entry-level experience is okay with the desire to learn and help build community. Experience working with gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender people preferred. Prefer experience in facilitating groups

Commitment

6-month minimum commitment. Two hours weekly or monthly, as defined by the selected group's schedule. Weekday mornings and afternoons for Vintage Adults (50+), afternoons for Young Adults (18-25), and evenings for Adults (20-55).

Skills Required

Excellent verbal communication and leadership skills, and the ability to work independently. Education in clinical studies and/or psychology is a plus. Facilitators go through training before being placed in a support group, and are asked to make a minimum 6-month commitment. Training includes guidelines for volunteers, tools to lead groups, conversation icebreakers, and how to defer from inappropriate topics of conversation. The Billy DeFrank Center and its valued donors sponsor this opportunity for you to obtain free training.
